Novata Excel Add-in

Pull ESG data, fund information, company details, and reporting metrics straight into your worksheets with a small set of custom functions.

Getting started

Five steps to start pulling Novata data into your spreadsheets.

  1. Install the add-in. Make sure the Novata Excel Add-in is installed and enabled in your Excel application.
  2. Sign in. Sign in to your Novata account through the add-in taskpane.
  3. Pick an environment. Choose the appropriate environment (Production, Staging, or Local).
  4. Use a function. Type =NOV. in any cell to see the available functions.
  5. Need help? Click any function in the formula builder and select More help to view detailed documentation.

Available functions

All custom functions are prefixed with NOV. To use one, type =NOV. in any cell, pick the function you want, and fill in the parameters Excel prompts you for. Field names are case-sensitive and you must be signed in to the add-in for functions to return data. Select a tab below to see the syntax for each function.

FUND

Retrieve fund attributes such as name, currency, type, vintage year, size, and operating regions.

=NOV.FUND(fundId, fieldName)

Ribbon actions

The Novata tab in Excel's ribbon adds three buttons for managing the data on your worksheet. Use them when functions get out of sync, when you want a clean slate, or when a long-running call needs to be cancelled.

Clear Data

Erases every value, formula, and bit of formatting from the active worksheet, leaving an empty grid behind.

When to use: you want a fresh sheet to rebuild from scratch, or you've been experimenting and want to wipe the results in one click. This action cannot be undone, so save first if you need a copy.

Refresh Functions

Clears the add-in's response cache and re-runs every NOV. custom function on the active sheet against the latest data in Novata.

When to use: you've updated answers, metrics, or fund details in Novata and the spreadsheet is still showing the previous values. Excel doesn't re-fetch data automatically on its own — this button forces it.

Stop Requests

Aborts every Novata API call that's currently in flight and discards any queued calls that haven't started yet.

When to use: a large refresh is taking too long, or you've realised the formulas point at the wrong workbook and don't want to wait for them to finish. After stopping you'll usually want to fix the inputs and click Refresh Functions again.

Quick tips

Small things that make working with the add-in much easier.

  • All function names are prefixed with NOV. (e.g. =NOV.FUND(...)).
  • Field names are case-sensitive — use the exact names shown in the documentation.
  • You must be signed in to the Novata Excel Add-in for functions to work.
  • Use Excel's autocomplete to see available parameters as you type.
  • Refer to the individual function pages for complete lists of available fields.
  • Error messages will indicate when required parameters are missing or invalid.

Common use cases

A few patterns to get you started.

Building a fund portfolio dashboard

Use NOV.FUND to pull fund names, sizes, and vintage years into a summary table.

=NOV.FUND(A2, "fund_name")
=NOV.FUND(A2, "fund_size")

Company ESG reporting

Combine NOV.COMP and NOV.ANSWER to assemble comprehensive ESG reports.

=NOV.COMP(B2, "fund_name")
=NOV.ANSWER(B2, "2024", "ESG Report", C2, "answer")

Report status tracking

Use NOV.REPORT to monitor report completion and submission status.

=NOV.REPORT(D2, E2, "2024", "report_status")
=NOV.REPORT(D2, E2, "2024", "report_completion")
